Let’s be real – most people don’t wake up feeling like supermodels. The thought of stepping in front of a camera (and trying to look natural while doing it) can feel intimidating. But here’s the good news: looking and feeling confident in your portrait session isn’t about being “perfect” – it’s about being real, relaxed, and a little bit guided by someone who knows how to bring out the best in you (that’s where I come in!)
Whether it’s your first time in front of the camera or your first time in a long time, here are my best tips to help you feel comfortable, confident, and totally yourself during your session.

1. Choose Outfits That Make You Feel Like You
The best outfit for your portrait session? Something you feel amazing in. You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe. Instead, focus on outfits that fit well, flatter your body type, and match your personal style.
Some quick outfit tips:
- Stick to solid colors or soft patterns that won’t distract from your face.
- Avoid logos, neon colors, or super trendy pieces you might not love in a few years.
- Bring a couple of options so we can switch things up (I’ll help you decide what works best on-site.)
Bonus tip: Layers and textures (like denim, knits, and accessories) photograph beautifully and add visual interest without feeling fussy.
2. Prep a Little, But Don’t Stress
Feeling confident often comes down to feeling prepared. Before your session:
- Get a good night’s sleep so you’re feeling fresh.
- Drink plenty of water the day before (your skin will thank you.)
- If you wear makeup, keep it true to you—go for a polished version of your everyday look. Or, treat yourself to professional makeup for a little boost.
- Bring the essentials: lip balm, a brush or comb, and touch-up powder if it’s warm outside.
I’ll send you a full prep guide before your session so you’ll know exactly what to expect—and what to bring.

3. Trust the Process (And Me!)
I get it – posing can feel awkward at first. That’s why you won’t be left wondering what to do with your hands or how to stand. I’ll guide you through natural prompts and easy direction that will make you feel comfortable in your own skin.
We’ll move around, chat, laugh, and take breaks when needed. You don’t have to “perform” – you just have to show up and be open. I’ll take care of the rest.
By the end of your session, you’ll be surprised how fun it was (and how good you look without trying to force it.)
4. Focus on the “Why”
You’re not getting portraits taken to impress strangers on the internet. You’re doing this to celebrate a season of life, to honor your story, or to capture memories with the people you love.
When you focus on the why, the nerves start to fade and the confidence kicks in. You’re not just taking pictures – you’re creating something meaningful.

5. Let Go of Perfection
You don’t need to be the “right” size or have the “perfect” smile. Confidence comes from showing up just as you are and trusting that who you are is more than enough. My job as your photographer is to highlight the real, beautiful, effortless version of you.
